Green building requirements in Boulder County:
- Longmont has a mandatory Green Points program that is less strict than Boulder County or Boulder
- City of Boulder has a mandatory Green Points + Green Building program
- Boulder County has a mandatory BuildSmart program (for unincorporated areas), and is the most strict program
- Niwot is in unincorporated Boulder County
- Louisville, Lafayette, and Erie do not have "green" programs, though they're considering implementing them in 2010 or later
In Boulder County, green building generally requires some or all of these components (for example, a 4,000 sqft home in unincorporated Boulder County would likely need to have ALL of these items in order to meet building code):
- onsite power generation (usually solar-powered)
- geothermal heating/cooling
- passive solar
- high-efficiency HVAC
- proper sun orientation for the structure
- proper window, eave, and overhang design
- foam insulation (or strawbale construction)
- a well-sealed building envelope (i.e., tight construction, no air leaks)
- solar water heating
- gray water systems
- mechanical air venting (for indoor air quality—IAQ)
Additionally, Boulder, Longmont, and Boulder County programs go beyond energy efficiency, and require things such as:
- use of sustainable building materials
- recycling of construction waste
- de-construction of existing structures (as opposed to traditional demolition)
